Wolfie as me

I’m finally getting around to posting some of the images I shot this summer! These are some pictures I took of my friend Wolfie in my bedroom for my “me vs others” series before heading out to LA in July. I love blending elements of what’s mine vs what is my model’s, in this case I told wolfie to bring over things that reminded her of me, and she brought a ton of ponies and pastel clothes.

These were published over at haunt magazine today as well, you can view them on their website over here.

Portraits of Andrew

These are some portraits I shot of my friend Andrew when I was living in Brooklyn
in March. I had never met Andrew before and he came over to my place for me to take his picture – I had been shooting a lot of commercial stuff at the time and wanted to go back to my roots and do something quiet and soft. I put some of my blush on his cheeks & played with some dead flowers I had lying around.
At the end of the shoot we went to my rooftop and he started climbing the water tower – I have to say that it was really cold that day, also I’m terrified of heights so props to him for that!!
I love when I get to meet people for the first time & photograph them, it’s like a memory of that first impression. This one was a sweet cold spring afternoon.

These were featured in Haunt Mag

Chloe & Hobbes/Me

I’ve always been a self portrait artist but at some point over the last couple of years for the first time in my life I started to feel uncomfortable with showing myself online… something about vulnerability that started to freak me out, so I stopped taking self portraits. But I still felt that every picture I took WAS a self portrait, a projection of myself onto others – I wanted to explore that idea more, and push it to the extreme, literally putting what I see of myself/my identity on other people, blurring the line between what is me and what is not, how would I look in other people’s skin, etc. Not just clothing but also colours, poses, mannerisms. I’ve been photographing this series since December (2014), doing a couple of shoots a month, usually it’s been quite unplanned, I’ve photographed people who are very close to me as well as people I barely know. These ones were shot on a rainy afternoon in Brooklyn, Chloe and Hobbes were flying back to LA that day and we had a couple of hours to kill before they had to go to the airport.

These were featured in Polyester Zine this month, and images from this series will be in “Same” an exhibition curated by Molly Soda coming up in New York this August - you can see more about the exhibition here

Shahzaade in Brooklyn

I’m finally getting around to editing pictures from the last few months and getting back in WORK mode! I’ve been going back and forth between Montreal and New York quite a bit, these are from a commissioned portrait session I did with Shahzaade a few weeks ago in Brooklyn. I really love photographing someone upon meeting them for the first time, there’s something quite wonderful about getting a picture of that first impression.

I’ll be in Los Angeles from July 15th to the 29th if anyone would like to work with me while I’m there you can reach out via email at laurencephilomenephoto(at)gmail(dot)com!
